Mike Webster is senior vice president and a portfolio manager for O’Neil Capital Management (OCM), which provides financial guidance and funding for entities in the O’Neil family of businesses, including William O’Neil + Company, MarketSmith Incorporated, and Investor’s Business Daily (IBD). Mike joined William O’Neil + Company in 1997 as a data research analyst and became a portfolio manager in 2000 after achieving great success managing his personal account. From 2000–2015, he had the privilege of working personally with investing legend William J. O’Neil to manage the firm’s list of stock ideas for institutional clients.

During his time as Director of Research and Development, Mike created several of the firm’s proprietary ratings and developed an automated stock idea generator for MarketSmith. He was the chief designer of the unique and innovative Pattern Recognition technology used in William O’Neil + Company’s flagship investing platform, PANARAY®. He was also the co-lead of many “Model Book” studies, which profile the characteristics of the greatest winning stocks since the 1880s. During one of these studies, Mike discovered the firm’s most recent base pattern, the “IPO Base,” and developed an investment Home Study program on how to trade using the pattern for IBD.

For several years, Mike traveled the U.S. with Mr. O’Neil, teaching hundreds of investors how to properly follow his investment methodology. Mike also co-developed and taught investment workshops that focused on the O’Neil approach to technical analysis and general market trend following. He continues to trade his discretionary portfolios but also focuses his time on developing algorithmic trading strategies. He developed OCM’s first algo and is working hard on his second; both use Pattern Recognition, market trend following, and the technical O’Neil approach. Mike has also contributed to Mr. O’Neil’s bestselling books The Successful Investor and the fourth edition of How to Make Money in Stocks, and is featured in How to Make Money in Stocks Success Stories. He has a B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Irvine.
