Market Forecast: A Sustainable Global Expansion or Double Dip Recession?
There have been an increasing number of signs of late that the handoff from a global economic recovery to expansion may be at risk. Talk of a double dip recession in developed economies has resurfaced, exacerbated by the recent decision of the G20 members to focus on deficit reduction over further fiscal stimulus. This action has some worried that a multi-speed global economy—strong emerging markets growth and inflation, weak developed markets and deflation—may not be the path to a sustainable, private sector driven expansion. While the global economic recovery has boosted corporate profits thus far, some believe that further gains will be increasingly harder to come by. Stocks, which initially signaled a confidence in the transition from recovery to expansion, have apparently settled into a trading range as doubt begins to work its way back into the risk appetite equation. At the same time, long term interest rates have dropped to record lows while gold makes record highs.
Will the global economy continue to work its way toward a sustainable economic expansion? Or will a recession emerge in developed economies, accompanied by the dreaded deflation?
Join us as we gather leading economists, investment strategists, and other key thought leaders to discuss and debate these and other challenging issues facing investors.
